Cafeteria Appreciation

Principal's Update

Dear Trottier Families,

It’s been a great week back from April vacation! It was wonderful to welcome students back into the building—they’ve acclimated nicely, and we’re looking forward to making the most of this final stretch of the school year.

Teacher Appreciation Week – May 6–10
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. I want to extend my sincere thanks to SOS for their ongoing support of our teachers. I also encourage families and students to take a moment to send a kind note of appreciation to a teacher who has made a difference this year. These small gestures often go a long way.

Cafeteria Staff Appreciation
On Friday, our students recognized our wonderful cafeteria staff by writing heartfelt notes of appreciation on paper plates. The staff arrived to find this thoughtful display, and it was a meaningful reminder of how much they are valued. I want to personally thank our cafeteria team—they work tirelessly each day to ensure our students are well-nourished and cared for. Their dedication, warmth, and consistency make a difference in our school community, and I am truly grateful for all they do.

Field Trip

French Field Trip to C’est La Vie Bistro

Last week, Madame Okacha treated her eighth-grade French students to a field trip at C’est La Vie Bistro in Northborough. This authentic cultural experience was a wonderful extension of their curriculum. Our students had a great time enjoying lunch together, and I truly appreciated the gratitude they expressed to Madame Okacha for going the extra mile—moments like these make a lasting impact.

8th Grade SBIRT Screener

Dear Parent or Guardian of 8th-grade students,

We are writing to share information regarding one component of our school plans to address substance use prevention in our students. There are several pieces to this work, and we would like to take this opportunity to share information and ways that families can participate and/or opt their child out of one of these programs. As a school community, we believe that it is important for students to learn about making healthy choices regarding drug and alcohol use and to understand the potential risks of substance use during adolescence. This year, we will be continuing our work to ensure all students receive support in order to become healthy and balanced learners and to make good choices about their health and well-being.

All Massachusetts public schools are required to include a verbal substance use screening as part of their yearly mandated universal health-screening programs. Our district uses the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) protocol with students in Grade 8. Students will individually be asked several questions about their substance use by a trained professional. The purpose of this effort is to educate and prevent, or at least delay, alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, or other drug use. The SBIRT program reinforces healthy decisions and addresses concerns about substance use with the goal of improving health, safety, and success in school. Students who are not using substances will have their healthy choices reinforced. When any student reports using alcohol or other drugs or seems at risk for future substance use, the screener will ask follow-up questions, provide feedback, and have a brief conversation with that student. Most screening sessions last approximately 5-15 minutes, and students are able to decline or end participation at any time.

What your child tells the screener is confidential and will not be shared with any other person without prior written consent of the student, parent, or guardian, except in cases of immediate medical emergency or when disclosure is otherwise required by state law. No written record of the results of this verbal screening is kept with information that identifies any individual student. Trottier staff will conduct the screener the week of May 27th. Screening results will not be put with any other information that identifies any child and will not be included in your child’s school record, per MA state law. If you want to opt your child out of the screening, please complete this SBIRT opt-out form. Your child may also opt out at the time of the screening. Together, schools and families CAN make a difference for the youth in our community. One way to prevent youth alcohol and other drug use is to talk with your child about your thoughts and expectations about alcohol and drug use. You can view the screening tool and other SBIRT resources in a variety of languages at www.masbirt.org/schools

Monthly Recognitions

American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

During the month of May, the Northborough-Southborough Schools will be recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.  The month of May is significant as it recognizes the immigration of Japanese people to the United States in 1843.  Chinese workers played a prominent role in the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869.

As a district, we celebrate and honor the impact that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have had on our society, culture, and history.

National Jewish American Heritage Month is a month-long celebration in May that recognizes the contributions of Jewish Americans to American culture, history, and society. It was first proclaimed by President George W. Bush in 2006 and has since been recognized annually. The month-long observance includes various cultural events, exhibits, and activities across the United States.
